Persatuan Pink Champion Perak (PPCP) is a independent voluntary support group consisting of breast cancer survivors and passionate individuals in providing breast cancer awareness and education and as well as psychosocial support by sharing their experiences to help other women recovering breast cancer.
The group started in early 2005 with 2 doctors and 3 survivors. One of the doctors, Dr Sumithra Sivasuntharam is now the advisor to the support group. It was not until December 2005,when more members were recruited that PPCP was registered.
When Dr Sumithra moved to Hospital Pantai Ipoh(HPI), the group moved with her because most of the patients were referred by her. Dr Sumithra is a surgeon specializing in breast surgery. PPCP was then introduced to the Hospital Pantai Ipoh management. We have a lot of programmes with HPI since then.
HPI was kind enough to let PPCP used their halls for PPCP’s monthly gathering which is on every second Saturday of the month. In these gatherings we have group psychosocial support to newly diagnosed patients and survivors alike. Therapeautic social activities are also organized to help these women cope and deal with their treatment and recovery. Meanwhile our counsellers are meeting patients in their homes and wards.
Education and awareness programmes on breast cancer issues for our members and the public have become high in our agenda. So networking is very important with related organizations such as Jabatan Kesihatan, LPPKN, Private Hospitals and with other cancer support groups such as Pink Ribbon Wellness Foundation, BCWA, PRIDE, MAKNA, NCSM, CARE, Cancerlink etc as PPCP supports their objectives in educating survivors and the public in breast health awareness, BSE and Early Detection. Active members are regularly updated through visits, educational programmes and conferences.
The activities and operations of PPCP are funded by members , public donations and a few Fund Raising Events throughout these years.
PPCP is so lucky because it has just been recently adopted by Maybank to be under their Cahaya Kasih project. Under this programme Maybank and Hospital Pantai Ipoh has collaborated in sponsoring our new resource centre which is in HPI itself.
